•Incidence of cardiovascular events was more frequent in low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) than high eGFR group.•A large decline in eGFR was more observed in high eGFR than low eGFR group.•A large decline in eGFR was at a 2-fold risk of cardiovascular events.
