A systematic review of psychological, clinical and psychosocial correlates of perceived food intolerance

•First systematic review exploring correlates of perceived food intolerance (PFI).•PFI is associated with female sex, somatic symptoms and irritable bowel syndrome.•Associations between anxiety, depression, distress and PFI were inconsistent.•Future longitudinal research could identify modifiable psychological factors.•High-quality research is needed to develop a biopsychosocial understanding of PFI.
