•Obtaining neurodiagnostic studies significantly prolongs duration of stay in the ED.•Obtaining a CT prolonged ED length of stay by 1.5 h.•Having an EEG performed in the ED prolonged length of stay by 3.0 h.•In patients with new-onset seizures, EEGs revealed epileptiform activity in 37% of patients.
