•This review catalogues the effects of physical and/or psychosocial stress in rodents.•Different types of stress induce subtly different behavioural and biological phenotypes.•The combined effect of multiple stressor types results in a more severe pathological state.•This review will help animal researchers more appropriately design their experiments.
