Do trees have constant branch divergence angles?

•Many plant species display constant rotational angles between leaves along the stem.•This has led a number of tree models to assume constant angles between branches.•We test this assumption for three tree species, using terrestrial laser scan data.•Empirical branch divergence angle distributions are similar to the uniform distribution.•We prove that high bud mortality and branch shedding rates generate these patterns.
