•Ti/TiB2 microcomponents with a very high content of TiB2 were fabricated.•TiB nanocrystallines, defects and liquid phase were produced due to coupled fields.•TiB2-Ti and TiB-Ti grain boundaries were correlated with the reaction of Ti and TiB2.
