•Long-term hyper-resolution model is developed with CREST in Upper Blue Nile Basin.•CREST can simulate consistently well both evapotranspiration and discharge.•Incorporation of regulated lake outflow improves discharge at downstream outlets.•Cascading calibration provides good discharge in multi-scale subbasins.•CREST derived fine water cycle components can help local-scale water management.
