SPIN ASYMMETRY OF CUMULATIVE PROTONS IN THE REACTIONS PI-D-UP-ARROW-P(90-DEGREES)X AND KD-UP-ARROW-]P(90-DEGREES)X AT 40 GEV/C ON A POLARIZED DEUTERON TARGET

The results of measuring the spin asymmetry (the analyzing power) of protons from the reactions pi- (K -) +d(up) --> p(90-degrees) + X at the initial particle momentum 40 GeV/c are described. No significant asymmetries are found for emission of protons in the studied range of momenta (0.3-0.7 GeV/c) and angles (85-95-degrees in the laboratory system). The spin asymmetries averaged over the indicated intervals are found to be A(y)pi = (1 +/- 2) % and A(y)k = (9.4 +/- 9.8) % for the reactions with pions and kaons, respectively. The results are compared with theoretical predictions for these reactions (the model of hard parton collisions, the spectator mechanism of cumulative nucleon production, and so forth), and also with experimental data obtained in analogous studies.
