Influence of sodium bicarbonate on growth and metabolite production of the cyanobacterium Nostoc LAUN0015

Culture of cyanobacteria allows the study of its physiology and biochemical composition. To assess how sodium bicarbonate modulates growth and metabolite production in Nostoc LAUN0015, a bioassay at different concentrations (0, 2.5, 5 and 10 mM NaHCO3) with medium BG-11(0) and under laboratory conditions was established. To 5 mM NaHCO3 were found higher values of chlorophyll a, carotenoids, phycocianin, phycoerithrin, protein and lipids with 24.35 +/- 0.74, 5.52 +/- 1.25, 33.75 +/- 1.90, 46.91 +/- 5.45, 1420.95 +/- 53.05 and 36.11 +/- 0.74 mu g.mL(-1) respectively. It is confirmed the positive effect of bicarbonate on growth of Nostoc LAUN0015, which can be used as a starting point for further studies on production of biomass.
