•Comparison of the NUTS-2 regions in Europe in terms of road safety based on the Road Fatality Rate is presented.•Geographically Weighted Regression is a reliable tool for identifying regional differences in the NUTS2 regions.•GWR model is significantly reliable than the global model of linear regression.•Apart socioeconomic factors existing inner and outer borders between NUTS-2 regions were found to be statistically significant
