Bottoming Target Detection Using Time Reversal Processing

In this paper, a time reversal technique is proposed to enhance detection performance. When the time reversal technique is applied to the response of the clutter with strong time varying characteristic of shallow water, it is hard to obtain a high peak response. However, in the case that a cylindrical object is placed on the seafloor, However, in the case that a cylindrical object is placed on the seafloor, the time invariant property of the target is stronger than that of the reverberation by the clutters. For this reason, the time reversal technique can be applied to enhance the target signal. In this paper, it is demonstrated that the peak signal of the target buried in the seabed clutter becomes higher when applying the time reversal technique by exploiting the time-varying characteristics of the seabed clutter.
