摘要
•We study markets where firms competing on price advertise for consideration.•Firms can raise prices by using advertisements to segment the market.•Moderate ad costs can enable firms to use ads to raise prices and possibly profits.•Overly low ad costs lead to a wasteful ad war that fails to impact prices.•The results are robust to oligopoly, sequential ads and pricing, and asymmetries.
