•Giant cell arteritis is still a glucocorticoid-dependent disease.•Very early introduction of immunosuppressive agents minimizes the use of glucocorticoids.•Incidence of diabetes could be decreased by this strategy.•Safety in the elderly seems to be guaranteed.
