•Validation of mRNA/miRNA reference genes for quantitative RT-PCR in skin culture cells.•TBP represents the most suitable housekeeping gene for qPCR data normalization compared to HPRT1 and GADPH.•MiR-191-5p can be used as reference miRNA in qPCR analyses in skin culture cells under sex hormone exposure.
