•Certain multiwalled carbon nanotubes can induce cellular senescence.•Primary human mesothelial cells display SAHFs, SADSs, and LMNB1 depletion.•There is widespread impairment of the cytoskeleton and the chromatin.•Transcriptome analyses show signature for senescence-associated secretory phenotype.
