Abstract
The failure of retaining wall in earthquake is the main factor aggravating the harm of mountain hazards. However, its mechanism is not clear, which result in no effective aseismic measures can be used in project. Therefore, based on energy theory, taken the upper bound theorem as measure, the mechanism of energy input and dissipation under earthquake is studied. Furthermore, by analyzing the wave characters of destructive earthquake, and based on flexible retaining theory, a new aseismic design of retaining wall is proposed. At last, an example is given and shows the common retaining wall usually fails quickly in earthquake. On the contrary, the new system with EPS damping layer can dissipative seismic energy well.
