Metagenomic next-generation sequencing technology for detection of pathogens in blood of critically ill patients

•The positive rate of Metagenomic next-generation sequencing in critically ill patients who could not be diagnosed with blood culture was 41.3% (26/63).•Metagenomic next-generation sequencing exhibited the ability to detect co-infections in critically ill patients.•Metagenomic next-generation sequencing should be carried out as soon as possible to obtain higher positive detection rates.
