•Geosmin level in purge system water was affected by hydraulic retention time (HRT).•2.4-h and 4.6-h HRT resulted in lowest residual geosmin in water and salmon flesh.•Lowest off-flavor levels are achieved in purge systems with rapid water flushing.•This study adds knowledge about depuration protocols for RAS-produced Atlantic salmon.
