•Cereals samples were digested using microwave-assisted ultraviolet (MW-UV) method.•An optimization of MW-UV method was performed.•The determination of As, Cd, Hg, and Pb was performed by SF-ICP-MS and CVG-AAS.•The LODs obtained complies with the maximum limits established for As, Cd, and Pb.
