•First report on photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from fluorescein-sensitized Pt/SrTiO­3.•Activity is limited by light absorption and dye regeneration.•Surface photovoltage observes electron injection from FL into SrTiO3 and hole injection into MeOH and KI sacrificial donors.•Charge transfer is modulated by the redox potentials of the donors and acceptors.•Need to find dyes with greater resistance against self-oxidation and stronger binding to the SrTiO3 surface.
