•Euler-Euler simulations are compared with a comprehensive experimental database.•Observables comprise solid fraction, mean velocity, and fluctuation of both phases.•A complete closure model for the particle forces is applied.•New models for the lift and drag forces are proposed.•Strong interactions between the different submodels are observed.
