•An efficient process consisting of co-extraction of transition metals has been developed.•The extraction mechanism of co-extraction of transition metals was explored by slope analysis.•The theoretical co-extraction results were simulated and compared with experiment results.•High-purity lithium carbonate has been recovered by precipitation.
