Quantitative evaluation of fracture geometry influence on nonlinear flow in a single rock fracture

•A reliable method for measuring the aperture distributions of a fracture is proposed.•High precision hydraulic tests are conducted on 50 artificial tensile fractures.•The geometric characteristics of a fracture are quantified with two parameters.•New equations charactering the nonlinear flow behavior in a fracture are arrived.
