Radiocarbon evidence of the impact of forest-to-plantation conversion on soil organic carbon dynamics on a tropical island

•Vertical soil Δ14C profiles at five different forest sites are compared.•An abnormal up-profile Δ14C decrease in surface layer found at plantation sites.•Enhanced microbe-mediated SOM decomposition by plantation was suggested responsible.•Δ14C is a powerful tool for probing soil carbon dynamics.
