Nitrous oxide emissions as affected by fertilizer and water table management under a corn-soybean rotation

•Primary seasonal agricultural soil N2O emissions occur within 3–6 weeks of planting.•Solid cattle manure dampens the fluxes and slows the rate of N2O emissions.•Controlled drainage can reduce N2O emissions compared to tile drainage.•Cattle manure combined with controlled drainage significantly reduce N2O emissions while maintaining sustainable yields.
