•Daily rainfall-runoff models can calibrate successfully to monthly streamflow data.•Monthly and daily calibration perform similarly except for daily pattern metrics.•Parameter regionalisation reduces performance loss of monthly calibration.•Findings are robust with respect to choice of objective function.
