•Analysis of material from two pre-Columbian ‘black’ carvings from St Vincent.•Their chemical composition and biological components are similar to cannel coal.•Material for both carvings is therefore likely to have originated in South America.•Indicates potential social and trade networks spanning the circum-Caribbean.
