•We review the optical design principle of large aperture diffractive telescopes.•DOE fabrication techniques are discussed and different DOEs are presented.•Subaperture DOE stitching principle is presented and thoroughly discussed.•5 categories of representative diffractive telescopes are reviewed and compared.
