•We investigate the institutional preferences and the effect of institutional (mis)match on cooperation.•Most subjects prefer reward institution over punishment institution.•Institutional (mis)match does not have significant impacts on cooperation.•Subjects who prefer punishment tend to be free-riders.•The preference for punishment is significantly related to efficiency-reducing social preferences.
