•Fatigue short crack propagation behavior of SLM Inconel 718 alloy is studied by in situ SEM.•Fatigue crack growth deceleration is related to the blocking effects of grain boundaries.•Fatigue crack growth along the build-up plane is fastest.•Fatigue crack growth rates are higher at 650 °C than 25 °C regardless of orientation.
