Fermentation strategies for the efficient use of olive tree pruning biomass from a flexible biorefinery approach

•Detoxification with an ion-exchange resin triggers fermentation of pretreated OTP.•Fed-batch fermentation maximize ethanol production from both glucose and xylose.•180 g of ethanol can be obtained per kg of pretreated OTP biomass.•The strategy developed increased final ethanol yields by 12.5% from previous works.
