•The Mangalarga Marchador (MM) population does not exhibit severe inbreeding.•The generation interval and the completeness of the pedigree has improved over time.•There is a small loss of genetic diversity in the recent population.•The population does not exhibit serious factors that affect genetic variability.•The MM population doesn't have its genetic evolution impaired in Brazil.
