•A T-joint with rib cut-out and stringer is evaluated for its mechanical behaviour.•Tufting increases failure load by 24%, thereby increasing structural performance.•Tufting enhances absorbed energy capability and increase toughness by 120%.•Tufting retarded failure propagation rate by 24% and enhances damage tolerance aspect.
