•The impact of building retrofit on life cycle energy use was explored in a case study.•The building studied was a residential typology located in a subarctic climate.•Multi-objective optimization was used to consider the trade-off in life cycle energy.•Optimal solutions were identified for various energy-efficient building standards.•The optimal solution that fulfilled moderate building standard provided highest LCE savings.
