•Immersed boundary formulation incorporating a two-layer approach is proposed.•The convective terms are included to the two-layer approach for non-equilibrium flows.•The turbulent viscosity in the inner layer is modeled using the simplified k−ε−fμ model.•The capability of the IB method is broaden to high-Reynolds number turbulent flows.
