•Prescribed fire altered microhabitat characteristics important to salamanders.•Plethodon punctatus was negatively associated with burned habitat.•Plethodon cinereus abundance was lowest in high-severity burn areas.•Woodland salamander abundance was positively correlated with lower canopy cover.
