•Two nanoparticles of amphipathic tetracene with different PEG lengths have been prepared with simple re-precipitation method.•Singlet fission can be conducted in these two nanoparticles via a real charge-transfer intermediate state.•Longer PEG chain will lead a reduced interaction in nanoparticle and thus a lower singlet fission yield.
