•Pure-silica *BEA-type zeolite membrane was prepared by steam assisted conversion.•Silica support was used for zeolite membrane preparation.•Dissolution of tubular silica support functions as a source for seed layer growth.•*BEA membrane showed n-butanol selectivity and high flux by pervaporation.•The membrane formation method can reduce the cost of raw materials used.
