•Chronic stress pathology (CSP) is characterized by patterns of synaptic dysconnectivity.•CSP dysconnectivity is reversible within a month of discontinuing stress in rodents.•The effects of ketamine on CSP dysconnectivity are also short lived.•The field should focus on the reversibility of these synaptic changes.•Mechanisms of CSP reversibility may unravel new approaches toward curing depression.
