A water and salt balance model for the polders and islands in the Ganges delta

•A novel time-series model of water and salt stores and flows in idealised polder.•Conceptually simple, but reproduces the complex water and salt behaviour observed.•Results verified with detailed crop modelling results.•Useful for investigating water and salt management procedures, and future impacts.•It is the only model which deals with the transfers of water and salt.
