•Green solvents, vitamin B3-based protic ionic liquids (VB3PILs) are synthesized.•VB3PILs show strong extraction ability for astilbin from rhizoma smilacis glabrae.•Physicochemical properties of VB3PILs have a great influence on the extraction.
