•Tools for evidence appraisal are critical for risk assessment of chemicals.•Systematic review (SR) methodology is increasingly applied in risk assessment.•The application of the SciRAP tool was explored and compared to other tools.•The SciRAP and IRIS tools were compared in a case study.•We reflect on possible further developments of the SciRAP tool in a SR context.
