Experimental study on damage detectable brace type shear fuses

•A new type of high-performance all-steel axial-type shear fuses is proposed.•Damage of the proposed axial-type shear fuses is detectable and can be correlated with inter-story drift.•Experimental study on effects of critical design parameters is conducted.•Excellent cumulative ductility, stable and symmetric hysteretic properties is achieved.•Design formulae of the stiffness and strength are proposed.•Damage-controlled effect in a frame is verified through the time history analysis.
