•Alpha-adrenergic blockers can help insemination catheter go further into the sheep cervix.•Transcervical passage was facilitated using tamsulosin and prazosin in ewes.•Tamsulosin and prazosin apparently have a dose-dependent effect on cervical dilation.•Tamsulosin and prazosin applied locally on the cervix does not cause systemic and uterine hemodynamic effects.
