Hydrogen production by methane decomposition: Analysis of thermodynamic carbon properties and process evaluation

•Thermal methane decomposition (TDM) process for hydrogen production is simulated.•Thermodynamic properties of produced carbon type are reviewed.•TDM equilibrium in dependence of carbon type and temperature is calculated.•Sensitivity study of process parameters, including carbon type, is presented.•Energy input increases in average by 14.2% for carbon types differ from graphite.
