TREATMENT OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY WITH HERBAL DECOCTION: CASE REPORT

Introduction: Although diabetes and its complications have been reportedly modulated with Chinese herbs in experimental animals or in humans with combined herbal decoctions, there is paucity of information in literature on the treatment of diabetic retinopathy in humans with a single Chinese herbal decoction. Hence this study which reports for the first time, the treatment of diabetic retinopathy in human subjects with herbal decoction of the Chinese recipes that is based on "tonifying after dredging stasis" a theory from "Shenshiyaohan". Case Presentation: The clinical effect of the herbal decoction on diabetic retinopathy was observed and the study reports a case of stage II diabetic retinopathy treated with sugar reducing pulse invigorating formula based on "tonifying after dredging stasis" theory from "Shenshiyaohan". Conclusions: This study showed that this herbal decoction might be a good therapeutic option for the management/treatment of diabetic retinopathy.
