•Neck contralateral lateral flexion increases strain in the median nerve at the wrist.•Neck contralateral lateral flexion produced proximal excursion of the median nerve at the wrist.•The flexor digitorum superficialis muscle was not affected by cervical contralateral lateral flexion.•Neck contralateral lateral flexion could be considered as a useful structural differentiation manoeuvre.
