•The accuracy of camera-based gaze-estimation in VR HMDs decreases as the HMD shifts.•Shifts of virtual reality headsets can be modeled with a single drift vector.•Our method estimates drift vectors from saliency maps extracted from VR content.•Our method can accurately estimate and compensate for shifts of an in-use HMD.
