•Pro-inflammatory cytokines do not appear to be associated with specific clinical features in interepisode bipolar disorder.•Cytokines are probably state rather than trait markers in bipolar disorder.•Cytokines are presumably of no utility in distinguishing patients with euthymic bipolar disorder from healthy control subjects.•Interleukin-1β may have clinical utility as an early sign of recurrence of depression during euthymia in bipolar disorder.
