Estrous detection with an activity and rumination monitoring system in an organic grazing and a low-input conventional dairy herd

•Accuracy of estrus detection was lower during the grazing period.•Estrus detection was more accurate during the winter months.•Adjusting the threshold of estrus detection may provide more control of generated estrus alerts.•The activity and rumination monitoring system showed potential for estrus detection in grazing herds.
